Young Hero

Dedicated to Ryder Williams

By Arthur Peng

When towering waves unleash their white roar,
 When the sea charges toward the shore like wild, galloping horses,
 Some choose to step back—
 But you ran straight into the wind and waves.

You were only sixteen,
 Your shoulders still carrying the innocence of youth;
 Yet your courage was wider than the ocean,
 And your resolve firmer than the rocks.

Without hesitation,
 Without weighing danger against reward,
 You leaped into the raging surf,
 Holding life tightly within your embrace.

Again and again,
 The waves swallowed you;
 Again and again,
 You rose from the sea, lifting hope above the water.

Your arms
 Were not made of steel,
 Yet they proved stronger than steel.
 Your embrace
 Was not a harbor,
 Yet it brought a young life safely back to shore.

Heroes
 Are not always those who wear capes;
 Heroes
 Do not always wear shining medals.

A true hero
 Is someone who,
 When others need help the most,
 Places their own safety last
 And another person’s life first.

On that day,
 The sea breeze of California remembered your name;
 The rolling waves remembered your silhouette;
 The sunshine welcomed your returning steps,
 And the applause belonged to an ordinary yet extraordinary young man.

Ryder Williams,

Your name
 Is written not only in the headlines,
 But also in the admiration and gratitude of countless hearts.

May your courage
 Be like a lighthouse, guiding more young souls;
 May your kindness
 Be like the dawn upon the sea, warming every life it touches.

For a true hero
 Is not the one who conquers the ocean,
 But the one who,
 Amid towering waves and raging storms,
 Still chooses to protect life.

We salute you, young hero!

May courage always walk beside you,
 And may honor accompany you throughout your life.
